The 2008 Essence Music Festival went down this past weekend! WoW! The event which took place at the Ernest N. Morial Covention Center and the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans was a SUCCESS. The star studded event last all weekend with great performances from Chris Brown, Rihanna, Kanye West, LL Cool J, Mary J. Blige and so much more. Superstar Kanye West has teamed with Absolut Vodka to release a comical video entitled “Be Kanye.” The lighthearted, 1 minute commercial is an advertisement shot in retro 80’s format complete with loud colors and cheesy sound effects. The commercial is the latest project between West and Absolut Vodka since a sponsorship deal was announced in February 2008. In related news, Kanye West’s team has asked im to enroll in anger management classes. (more…)

Venus and Serena Williams steamrolled over their opponents at Wimbledon this week to reach Saturday’s final round together for the first time in five years. Venus Williams defeats her sister Serena in Wimbledon final…The older sibling, with a 7-5, 6-4 victory, now has five women’s singles titles in her last nine visits to the All England Club. Serenea took the loss pretty hard.

Sony’s Hancock (starring Will Smith) showed the strength of a superhero in its debut on Tuesday, grossing $6.8 million during two screenings in 3,680 theaters. OMG! Who watched the premiere of VH1’s “I Love Money” last night!? I was starting to get really bored of all the reality shows coming out, but this one I WILL WATCH. Too funny! Fourteen Contestants/Rejects (which includes, 12 Pack, Chance, Midget Mac, Hoopz, Nibblz, Destiney Moore, etc…) from Flavor of Love, I Love New York, and Rock of Love were chosen to compete in a series of challenges until one walks away with $250,000.00. Last night, the first unofficial challenge was them getting off the boat without getting wet as it dropped them off in front of their mansion in Mexico. All failed, including Midget Mac who reminded us that he is afraid of drowning (help me, help me please, LOL!)! 12 Pack was nice enough to carry him off. All the contestants meet with Craig J. Jackson, the host of the show, who tells them they’re competing for something more valuable than the love of Flavor Flav, Tiffany Pollard or Bret Michaels: a quarter of a million dollars. The challenges begin…and everyone will be fighting for a chance to win the grand prize. For those of you who missed it, I’m sure VH1 will be playing re-runs all week. The 14th Annual 2008 Essence Music Festival presented by Coca-Cola, taking place this Fourth of July weekend (July 4, 5, 6) will return to New Orleans to convene the country’s largest gathering of African-Americans to celebrate black music. The 2008 Essence Music Festival features performances by the largest assembly of black musical talent in the world, augmented by community-oriented Essence Empowerment Seminars led by the country’s most prominent African-American leaders.
