Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced to four months in jail this past Tuesday for the so-called “sex-and-text scandal.” Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner called him “arrogant and defiant” and questioned the sincerity of a guilty plea that ended his career at City Hall. Do you think the Judge was right? Does he deserve his sentence?

Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner said no opportunity for early release will be provided. Kwame was convicted, after pleading guilty, to lying about an affair with his chief of staff in the course of 2007 civil suit. He left office in September after 7 years on the job. “The Wayne County jail, and the cell Mr. Kilpatrick will be staying in, is no country club,” Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans said. “It’s a Spartan cell, cinderblock, typical of jail cells.”

He and chief of staff Christine Beatty deny the affair but text messages between the two were published in the Detroit Free Press.

Asked how the ex-mayor’s first night was in the Wayne County Jail, sheriff’s spokesman John Roach said: “Quiet.” The ex-mayor also had at least two visitors Wednesday morning: his wife, Carlita; mother, Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick and sister, Ayanna Kilpatrick.
