Even though California is known for its glitz and glamour, the state is in deep debt of over $26 billion dollars! The State has exhausted all ways to decrease the debt, so they proposed a plan to legalize Marijuana which would help the state out by gaining “$990 million from a $50-per-ounce fee and $392 million in sales taxes.”
The bill introduced by San Francisco Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano in February would allow adults 21 and older to legally possess, grow and sell marijuana.{Presumably you would have to acquire a license or else how would they tax it?}
Advocates and opponents do agree that California is by far the country’s top pot-producing state. Last year law enforcement agencies in California seized nearly 5.3 million plants. The state director of the Drug Policy Alliance says they have to “consider innovative sources of new revenue, and marijuana should be at the top of that list.”
According to studies, Marijuana use would increase because the prices will decrease by 30% according to reports.
What do you think about this proposed plan? Would it backfire? Should they try this nationwide?
