PEOPLE.com talked to Bernie Mac’s wife, Rhonda, and daughter who were present when he took his last breath. B-Mac suffered complications from pneumonia in a Chicago hospital at 2 a.m. Saturday.
“He struggled for his life. He couldn’t breathe. He opened his eyes on his own and looked at Rhonda. She called his name, and he opened his eyes and nodded to her. She smiled at him and told him, ‘Don’t leave me … ‘I’m waiting for you to come back.’ He shrugged his shoulders, and she said that’s when she knew he was tired. He signaled to her that his body was tired.”, his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Grossett, revealed.
B-Mac has been married to his wife Rhonda since 1977. There daughter Je’Niece (pictured below), who is now 30 years old, was there too. “[The doctors] were working on him,” says Grossett. “They tried to resuscitate him two times. One time he came back for about an hour. Then he went into cardiac arrest the second time.”

The Emmy and Gold Globe-nominated comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, which is an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the organs of afflicted persons. The disease went into remission in 2005, but he fought it off until early this morning when he took his last breath. Mac is survived by his wife Rhonda McCullough, their daughter, Je’Niece, a son-in-law and a granddaughter, Jasmine. Bernie Mac will be greatly missed!
