Marion Jones, former Olympic sprinter, was the Oprah Winfrey show yesterday. This was her first interview since she was released from prison for steriod abuse during her career. Jones explained her decision to lie to federal prosecutors about her use of the once-undetectable designer steroid THG, called “the clear” by clients of the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative (BALCO). “And so when they showed it to me and they said this is the substance, and I knew that I had taken that substance, I made the decision that I was going to lie and I was going, you know, try and cover it up,” Jones told Winfrey. Marion Jones was released from prison Friday morning. The former track star has completed her sentence of six months and was released from a halfway house in San Antonio. Jones’ sentence also includes 800 hours of community service and two years probation. As you may recall, Marion Jones was sentenced to prison for lying to federal investigators about her use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Marion Jones appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Wednesday. This is her first television interview since being sentenced last week to six months in prison for lying to investigators about steroid use and a check-fraud scam.”I want people to understand that, you know, everybody makes mistakes. … I truly think that a person’s character is determined by their admission of their mistakes and then beyond that, what do I do about it?” Jones said via satellite from Austin, Texas, where she lives. Marion Jones was sentenced today to six months in prison for lying about using steroids and a check-fraud scam, despite beseeching the judge that she not be separated from her two young children “even for a short period of time.” “I ask you to be as merciful as a human being can be,” said Jones, as she cried on her husband’s arm. Disgraced track star Marion Jones has returned the five medals she won at the 2000 Olympics, just days after the International Olympic Committee said it would move quickly to strip her of the medals after she pleaded guilty Friday to using steroids. 

The five medals won by Marion Jones in Sydney may be in jeopardy after the track sprinter sent a letter to close family and friends admitting that she used steroids before the 2000 Olympics.  Jones said she took “the clear” for two years, beginning in 1999, and that she received it from former coach Trevor Graham, who told her it was flaxseed oil, reports the Washington Post.
