Did you make it to Miami Beach for Memorial Day Weekend? Well, over 200,000 people migrated to Miami Beach this past weekend to celebrate it’s annual Memorial Day celebration. Miami Beach has traditionally attracted an urban/hip-hop crowd for years. Although in past years, the crime and arrest rate were high, this year only 135 people were arrested for misdemeanor crimes as of Saturday which is a BIG drop from 2006 and 2007. In 2006, a total of 1,100 people were arrested that weekend which accounted for 10% of Miami Beach’s overall arrests in 2006. 2007 arrests total 600 during the holiday weekend. The Police Chief of Miami Beach said the increase drop of arrests was due to less aggressive police tactics which he believes worked in their favor. This weekend was a big money maker for Miami as well. The hotels were at 90% occupancy and the restaurants were at full capacity morning, noon, and night. I hope next year is just as successful.
